China’s Potential Shift in Supporting Iran Raises US Concerns

(MENAFN) China might be moving toward offering Iran financial aid, replacement components, and missile-related parts, according to a CNN report on Friday.

The report, citing three individuals familiar with the situation, stated that Beijing has so far avoided direct participation in the conflict. However, US authorities are observing indications that China’s stance could be evolving.

China remains a major purchaser of Iranian crude oil and has separately encouraged Tehran to "ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz" for commercial vessels, the report noted.

An intelligence source told CNN that Beijing is "approaching any potential support cautiously," partly due to concerns that the conflict could endanger its energy security.

The CIA declined to provide comments on the intelligence, the report added. Additionally, the report suggested that Russia has allegedly shared satellite imagery and other targeting data with Iran, including information on the positions and movements of US forces.

Last week, an Iranian drone strike in Kuwait resulted in the deaths of six US troops and injuries to several others.

Iran has deployed thousands of attack drones and hundreds of missiles against US military installations, embassies, and civilian sites, while US and Israeli strikes have targeted more than 2,000 locations in Iran.

Tensions in the region have escalated sharply since large-scale US and Israeli strikes on Iran began last Saturday, reportedly causing over 1,000 casualties, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, more than 150 schoolgirls, and senior military officials.
